RETINOID TREATMENT AT A GLANCE
WHAT IT DOES: Retinoids are a class of compounds derived from vitamin A showing measurable effects in the skin. The various forms of retinoid function differently in the skin, but as a class of compounds, retinoid has been shown to modify abnormal follicular keratinization, modify cellular turnover in the skin, stimulate collagen formation, reduce inflammation, stimulate fibroblast activity, and prevent loss of collagen.2 As one of the most studied compounds in dermatology, clinical studies on topical retinoid date back to the 1960s with current FDA approvals for retinoid for acne treatment and signs of photoaging. Ongoing studies of retinoid use alone and in combination with other agents suggest that there is potential for the clinical use of retinoid in the treatment of other dermatological conditions in the future.3
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Vitamin A, while essential for many functions of the body, can be problematic in excess during pregnancy. Ingestion of excessive vitamin A has been clearly shown to impair embryonic development and encourage birth defects. This explains the heavy regulation and compulsory birth control requirements for internal vitamin A therapies such as isotretinoin (commonly referred to as Accutane®). For topically applied sources of vitamin A such as prescription creams with tretinoin or dermocosmetic retinoid creams or serums, there is still some question if the retinoid can be absorbed into the bloodstream. For ethical reasons, studies on the effects of topical vitamin A on pregnant women do not exist, and as such, it is necessary to consult with a medical professional before using any retinoid product whilst pregnant and/or nursing.
